Take advantage of a long layover.

Have you ever had a long layover while traveling and wondered what to do with your time while you waited in the airport? When my daughter, Adrienne, flew home from Thailand, she had a 9 hour layover in Singapore. There are two free tours that are offered at the airport, but she was unable to get on either of them. She decided to take the train, see the city, explore Chinatown and get some lunch. Instead of just waiting in the airport, she was able to have another travel experience.

Some airports have a lot to do while you wait for your connectionLondon has great shopping. You can even hire aairport-dusseldorf-197743_640 personal shopper while in the airport. Munich has covered beer gardens where you can get traditional cuisine and a beer from their own brewery. Paris has plenty of nice restaurants and bars and play areas for children. But with more than a couple of hours to fill, you may want to take advantage of being in a city that you always wanted to visit and take a tour while you wait.

If you are planning on taking advantage of a long layover, before you leave home, you want to check on whether you need a transit visa. Also before you leave the airport for a tour during your layover, keep a few things in mind.

  • Always check beforehand whether your ticket allows you to leave the airport.
  • Be aware that you will have to go through customs and immigration on the way out and you have to pass through security on the way back in.
  • Be sure that your luggage is checked all the way through to your final destination. If not you can store it in the airport locker.
  • Give yourself plenty of time to get back to the airport. It is advised that you be back at least 2 hours before your flight. If you take a taxi always take into account the traffic and other delays.

In London there a few different companies that offer Layover Tours. They will pick you up directly

London Eye from across the river

from the airport and take you on a city tour, stopping at some of the interesting sights. The London Heathrow Express runs four trains an hour and stops at Paddington Station. It takes 15 minutes and you can tour the city on your own.

The Munich Airport is 40 minutes from Munich city center. On their website you can find information on what to do if you have a 4 hour layover or a 6 hour layover.

Again you want to be cautious with the time and how much is enough time for you to get back through security and be on time for your flight. The airport staff is on hand to advise passengers how much time is needed to clear security.  If you are working with me, I can set up a personal tour for you to see the highlights of the city that you are in during your layover.

So the next time you are connecting in a city and have a long layover, you may want think about checking a few sights off your bucket list!
